I have a few friends and family members that I use facebook to actually communicate with, lol.

Why Facebook 🙂 Why not any other tool.

Because it's the only way they all communicate 😞

So you'd be the family exile if you stopped using the 1 digital tool out of many to communicate?

Yep. I tend to only look at Facebook two days a week, and then mostly to keep up with friends and family that don't communicate other ways.

So if you emailed/texted/called, none of them would reply?

Phones are evil, I wouldn't have one if I didn't have to operate in modern society.

Emailed, they probably would, but around half of them don't even have an internet connection.

Edit: Some of them without internet connections do post things from the library/school.

absolutely. This is definitely the case for many of my online trading partners. We trade patches through the mail - but we call chat almost exclusively through FB.

80% of them I don't have those types of communications information.

I suppose I could write them a letter.

email is a dead communication form for young people. Granted I still use it every day, and so do young people who work in the real world. But really - what's the reason for moving away from FB? FYI, I didn't read the link at the top.

I can mostly skip FB, as long as I can keep FB Messenger.

Take 3 minutes out and read it then 🙂

                    As for the young people.

I am taking a during the work day break from Facebook. I log in a couple times of day for updating business pages but other than that just keep messenger open on my desktop for communicating with people.

Facebook is just a TIMESUCK for me. I do and have found lots of valuable information in different groups but generally I end up watching a dog or cat video.

While I very much use it for business communication and sales I am trying to keep the personal TIMESUCK part of my Facebook day to after hours.

Oh I completely believe (again not reading that link) that it does. The problem with social media is the amount of feedback that we get that we've never received in history.

It's only a few steps removed from telepathy - reading other peoples thoughts. So many people - especially kids - but their unbridled thoughts out there on FB, and then get bent when someone does agree with them.

LOL you should have seen the flame war that happened when someone posted on a picture I posted that they didn't like the movie the picture represented and I said they were dead to me - the flame war was epic.. and Ridiculous! If I hadn't deleted the thread, it probably would still be going on.

At least in normal non social media life, we have a conversation, we disagree, leave each others company for whatever reason, and move on - with social media things just seem to fester!

I've been without Facebook for ~7 years... I have an account, I just never use it.

I actually deleted my Facebook account a long time ago...

But then I couldn't log in to some websites and services that I had used Facebook login for, so I had to re-enable it just for that reason!!!

Also, as some others mentioned, my wife and I are completely separated from our families. Hers, across the ocean, mine, on the other side of the country. So Facebook helps staying close to them, sharing pictures, chatting, etc. Not as much for me, as I'd rather text, Skype, or call.

But a world without Facebook, I believe, would be a better world... and would make people better.

As @minion-queen mentioned, FB is such a timesuck... since getting the new Dell Laptop, I have only used FB from my phone or iPad... nothing else.

I don't miss it at all....

Because it is what everyone uses. Might as well have a challenge like "30 days no family" or "a month without talking to friends" or "don't see the sun for four weeks." Why do those things?

Yes, at it's core, it's what it was originally designed to do. I'm sure there are other examples of things that were designed for good and are at their core good, but aren't used that way.

Now, that is about 1% of what it does. The other 99% is all bad, which includes bad habits of the people using it, the advertising abuse, the drama that otherwise would not occur, the list goes on and on in addition with what was already said in many posts above. It's like a chain reaction.
