@gjacobse I like the proper docks better but hell yes - we have.... a half dozen?! of them in the office. Useful. Very useful.
What model,.. I'd go with a dock
Specifically we use these to great success:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392052
note: no IDE
I still have some IDE (PATA) drives of both 2.5 and 3.5"

I'd just simplify your setup by throwing the IDE drives directly into a fire!

Stay away from the Rosewill stuff. I had 3 of their USB -> IDE/SATA units, they worked well enough, but the build quality was terrible.

I suppose I could... but that means that I would retire about 2TBs worth of disk space.....

Got a dual-slot (IB-120CL-U3) one on my desk, better than most cheap "cables"/adapters: http://raidsonic.de/products/external_cases/hdd_ssd_docking/index_en.php

I have no need for IDE anymore. On my bench I have The StarTech USB 3.0 to 2.5/3.5in SATA Hard Drive Duplicator Docking Station - HDD / SSD
https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-3-5in-Duplicator-Docking-Station/dp/B00G6TG5YE/
It's great for pulling a drive out of a machine that may or may not boot to try to copy stuff off. I also use it a lot to copy HDD to SSD, or just cloning drives without having to use any software.

Looks like an OEM'd version of the RaidSonic stuff. Or the other way around. Is the casing made from aluminum or plastic (RaidSonic is aluminium)?

if you have two drives in, can you access them both? I don't need to do any disk duplications... just data copy - like backups

All the docks I have used will allow access to both drives simultaneously, it will just assign drive letters as needed.

Retired a few drives.

The platter magnets work really well for keeping stuff on the fridge.
-
@coliver Yup, they do that indeed. Or keeping track of screws from other parted devices in repair.
