I can manage the hardware as the datacenter admin, I don't need console access to the blades nor the network/storage gear.
But can you grant access to the console to the system admins and to the switching to the network admins and give them control of the physical components of their domains without giving access to other stuff? At least on the HPE blades at the era that we had them, HPE said that you could not and made us move from switched to pass through networking to get around it.
Of course.
Big Red V, by extension Digix, had been doing that since G3 era blades. Most of it was API driven, but even if you cracked down into the interface, each blade is limited towards your permissions.
We also are talking about hosting, our guys could do anything while the customer couldn't tell what they were on. If you are talking about SOX stuff, it's just easier to split the environment. If you are talking about individual production teams, that's done via role delegation.

HPE didn't have that capability when we abandoned them. But for latency reasons, could have the shared network pipelines either. If you can bundle the networking together, it's not so bad.

Can you ask HPE if you can remove the kit list and just pick out your own that totals $60k? If its not useful to you, then what is the point.
I didn't take part in the contest as its US only. Quite often these things are US only. But, I just assumed when I quickly ready the post on SW that you 'had a budget of $60k' to buy what you want from them...Sucks to be told a list which is useless to you.
After they remove the mark up, I doubt this comes close to $60k anyway. Its probably just an order of kit they had which got cancelled so they gave away...
Pfft. If they don't let you sell it, say you are going with Dell as the free Sh*T is useless to you.

The point is basically what Scott mentioned earlier - they hope you'll buy into using this gear that's almost entirely wrong for SMB and spend a ton more money on things you shouldn't but require to make this 'free' hardware work.

Yeah, they kind of acted like it was a makeover. But instead it's just dumping marketing loss leader kit that isn't useful in the SMB or on its own. Likely it's stuff that they couldn't shift or is known to generate more profit in sales than it loses by getting the customer to trigger a "sunk cost fallacy" emotional response.
Then suddenly they are buying a SAN, additional blades, etc. and HPE makes money on giving something useless away.

Well, if you have no lab equipment at all, and there is enough storage with it to setup at least a small lab, it could be worth it - but then again, it's power requirements might not be worth it.

Well, if you have no lab equipment at all, and there is enough storage with it to setup at least a small lab, it could be worth it - but then again, it's power requirements might not be worth it.
But it doesn't have storage with it. Only works if you have a spare SAN or NAS, and if the power is worth it.

Yup, 10U for two little servers, and then at least 2U for the storage you will need to back end it, that's a quarter of a rack dedicated for this. You could get that down to 2U total if you weren't using blades.

My understanding is that the parts list was listed ahead of time, not a surprise. So, in theory, only people for whom a blade center with some blades in it was useful would have entered. While I'm no fan of blades, @PSX_Defector is right that lots of shops use them and would like more of them. There are people for whom this would fit their business use case and they would like to win it. The issue here, I think, is that the winner turned out to be someone for whom it did not apply and now that we are examining it, it's not useful to him.

That's a bit much. HPE is truly giving away new gear that someone, like @PSX_Defector, would like. Someone with existing dual 200 circuits, a SAN (or NAS, not saying you can't use NAS) or doing HPC with open rack space that isn't in high demand might be pretty thrilled with this. A rare combination for the SMB, but that's why they listed the gear ahead of time.

@Shuey what is your status on having potentially enough power for this? Is that a major issue, or the 10U rack space? I'm assuming that you have the capacity to physically plug it in?
Do you have any older gear that could be used to build a SAM-SD? By doing that maybe you could make this into a lab or testing environment or secondary production (treat it as a separate machine in the cluster) and provide storage in that way? That would make for a good learning project on the storage side.

Yep, I was ignorant of what I was signing up for. I just saw $60,000 worth of free stuff from HP and thought "Oh snap, that'd be awesome to win that!". If I had done my research and really looked at the equipment ahead of time, I would've realized that it wasn't a good fit for us

A server with enough stuff to run a lab from Xbyte might cost less
