Take off? I didn't think they could go that fast.

Hmmmm, it's been a while since I rebooted my VPS, I might turn it on and reboot it a few times.

I've still got my VM up there... It just churns away. I usually have to reboot it when I want it to do anything, ha ha.

If these guys are so motivated to be cloud service providers, we don't they rebrand? They have a terrible name. Anyone who google searches them will stay far away...

They'd need to make a working product first.

considering this is their data center they never will be able to this is a small cluster for one, even with all racks fully populated. Secondly that's a very bad retro-fit data center, that's not how you build a real datacenter. Heck I can see sun light from outside on the floor meaning those concrete walls are exterior walls. This is likely just a warehouse they are using for servers. Doesn't seem to have any chiller pipes around either. Datcenter ceiling height is generally not that high either.

@Jason and then there are the VMware and SAN issues.

@MisterZee Mine let me in, but it was slow.

Edit: Scratch that. I get the DB Left the Building when trying to open the console.

Edit 2: My VM is up via SSH though, so no harm, no foul there.

They've been in their death throws for a long time. We actually figured out how they did it so cheaply a couple of years ago. They were super active here but never managed to get a working platform out the door. It would "kind of" work for a bit, but for long. We could see that they were using VMware and a SAN, which are not really viable for what they are doing. They are trying to build a cloud on legacy architecture and trying to pay for outside support which is too costly at scale. They don't know what they are doing and slapped something together that would allow them to make sales on day one without any expertise, so their startup costs looked cheap to VCs, but their operational cost was through the roof and never went down like a normal cloud provider would. So there was no way to make money when they scaled up. They have the most expensive platform with the lowest prices - simply doesn't work. But they lack the people with the know how to realize what they did wrong or how to fix it.

Immediately we saw that they were unable to get viable VMs running. After a few months they changed their tune and claimed to be a hobby system instead of a production cloud, but their advertising videos where they claimed to be production ready were archived and they were busted.

Thanks for the background! It confirms what I suspected.

I am not ready to call them crooks. I sincerely hope they succeed. The one-time fee works better for me than maintaining an aged PC in a closet at my university. I'm willing to suffer some downtime, crashes, and even awful disk I/O that feels like floppy.

I am guessing they lost some of their hardware. My VM crashed on Friday(11/25). I tried to initialize a new VM. Pending for over 24 hours. They kindly cancelled it but a second try at another init has been pending for nearly a day.

I am starting a cloud search... 😞 Does anyone maintain a list of cloud providers? As a non-profit I can get a pretty good deal at Amazon. $175 gets me $2k of AWS. That is overkill for what I need now.

Digital Ocean and Vultr are heavily recommended here, depending on what you want to do.

They openly took money under false pretenses, then proceeded to lie about it, then claimed that they would offer explanations, then ran away. It's been years and they've not fixed anything, nor from what we can tell even tried to fix anything. I think we are years past the "crooks" point there.
