NYPD opts for Windows Phone over iOS and Android

@scottalanmiller said in NYPD opts for Windows Phone over iOS and Android:
No, Windows phone isn't likely to do that, it's already a dead platform. BlackBerry got in early and built their reputation before iPhone and Android were around. Windows Phone is already on its way out, not on its way up. Microsoft has been actively phasing it out themselves (whether in mind share, apps, development, accessories, etc.) There will always be some IT manager with a personal agenda that will do something incredibly foolish to make deployments keep happening here and there. This is only news because the decision was so ridiculous, not because it shows Windows Phone adoption increasing. It actually shows the opposite, that adoption is so low now that a single police department choosing it is so absurd as to qualify as news.
Totally--that's why I was surprised to see this decision. I didn't know if MS was making a concerted effort at going after that market now that there was somewhat of a "hole" there.

"...there will be a time for it to be our focus, but right now it's part of the family but it's not the core of where I hope to generate developer interest over the next year"
They really kinda hurt themselves by not aggressively going after app developers early on, and they got the reputation of "not having apps" on their platform.

I bet this was not MS going after them.

They did go after developers, but they had nothing to offer them. Not having apps was bad, being loaded with scam apps and promoting them as the real apps and no usable app store, those were the killers that I saw. That and pointless or negative features being touted and nothing of value to users.

I think Windows is trying but they will try anything...
Related but unrelated - apparently LAPD is now going to have Tesla Model S for their cars
Lucky police department. Even stripped down I bet those cars will be nice.

Tesla are perfect for that. Big enough to haul lots of people, fast enough to catch anything.

Big enough to haul lots? What is your definition of "lots"
Most of the cars they sell are 4-5 people (2 front 3 elbow to elbow in the back) which is fine for police purposes (I don't disagree)
But it's not a bus hauling 52 people.

Tesla can do up to 7 in their sedan model. More than any police "car" on the market.

I've not looked at the sedans (or much of the product line besides the show stoppers) but 7 people is a pretty large person count.

THey are a much bigger vehicle than you would imagine. They are enormous inside. It's really a 5+2 design, but it's so big.

huh, 7 seats, all the quick pictures on Google show only kids in the very back seats. I suppose in a pinch, probably not really needed for a typical squad car though.
Does that thing have a front based 'trunk' then?

That's what a 5+2 means. 5 adults, 2 kids.

Yes, and it is huge.

Hey to be fair WP had Instagram. It was just perpetually in beta. I haven't looked but I wouldn't be surprised if it was still a beta.

I thought I heard it was officially released, but then again, I've never used instragram.. so I don't care.

It was still in the app store (or whatever they call it). It just said "BETA" beside it. No video ability and the UI was pretty bad.
It's pretty bad when a single guy (Rudy something or other) makes better apps on WP than the companies do. He made an Instagram app, snapchat (till they shut it down), 9gag, and some others.

Really? What's their top speed? Most electric cars take off like a bat out of hell as they produce full torque at low speeds, but also tend to top out at a slower speed than other vehicles. I don't know the top end for the different Tesla models off the top of my head. Keep in mind that anyone they'll be chasing will be competent enough to disable the 120mph factory limit mandated in Merica.
