Xen4.7: Specifically, support for "live-patching" of XenServer hosts
Kernel 4.4: Updated kernel to support future feature considerations
VM import/export performance: The importing/exporting of VMs now averages 2x faster than the previous version

Seems like worth downloading for my lab and giving this a go.
Will check it out tonight.
-
That speed improvement will be a really big deal.

Just looked over this article again. Not sure if this was there earlier, but I see now that they are calling it XenServer Ely Alpha 1.
Some of the comments are interesting as well.

@BRRABill Tobias' comment about the 2x vs 5x speed difference
Sam's comment about kernel boot options and significant performance improves for SCSI backends.

@BRRABill Tobias' comment about the 2x vs 5x speed difference
yeah I saw those yesterday. It will be interesting if he comes back with the setup info, etc to show that there was 5x but then it was lost.

@Dashrender Lots of good discussion on the issue here.

I've never had a bad experience with the import / export speeds of XenServer 6.5 or 7 as of yet.
Just the other day I had to create a full backup of a VM with 6.5TB of vdi and it completed in 16.5 hours.
So that's what 126Gb/s?
I think the biggest bottleneck people are having is the underlying source and target storage speeds. In the topic you posted @Danp it seems they are backing up to a tiny RAID5 array with 7200 rpm drives.

I was backing up SSD to SSD.

And what kind of performance did you have?
Was this XenServer to XenServer or XenServer to NAS, or something else?

It was XS to XS over a GB switch. I forget what the speeds were exactly, but they were slooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
I could try and find it here on the forum. We posted about it extensively. (@Dashrender had similar issues.)

I've gone from XenServer to a VM on a separate XenServer installation, across multiple switches, and still have had great performance.
When my original setup was to a literal desktop (turned into hypervisor) OBR10 with 4 SFF 500Gb 7200 rpm drives I still was getting 30 minute backup windows using XO.
I'm curious now if I'm the oddity... . .

It seems hit or miss.
@olivier has had good success in his lab, but also understands
a) it happens and
b) even his performance can be improved -

The speed performance has always been an "XS problem" from what @olivier has said IIRC.
So maybe he means he could have a better development lab to work with is what he means?

He is part of the group testing it on the bug tracker, and reporting his speeds. So I am assuming he is also seeing performance increases.
He's also super psyched they are fixing it.

For XS export speed: YMMV. I don't have major issues on my side, but some people (let's say 10/15%) had problems.
I suppose it's more related to a hardware problem.
I see improvements yes, but at the margin, I'm often saturating my GB link.
